about the artist and the art
making room for the strange and beautiful
I am an artist and designer who loves anything that is actively anti-patriarchy.
These 2 series : a portrait series and a print club aim to fight misogyny by attempting to dissolve it in our minds. lol that sounds a little crazy, but stick with me here...
Patriarchy thrives for a million different reasons, but two essential pillars of its success rely on : indoctrination so early its written into our wiring and making women think they're alone.
Now, there are entire libraries full of literature that dismantle patriarchal dogma - but, it's one thing to understand those theories intellectually, it's another to embody them. To unravel the poisoned subconscious convictions that have woven themselves into our survival is no easy feat. And its true, we no longer are sequestered to the kitchen. We've built entire communities, and industries, significant cultures -- but it can still sometimes feel like there aren't enough of us. Plus, the algorithms are working overtime to grip our minds and drive wedges in our solidarity ...
So, these two series aim at taking down those pillars. In small, easy, beautiful, moments.
The goal of the first series : to use portraiture to help re-write our internal programming; swap out patriarchal bullshit for regular reminders of truth.
The second : strengthen our collective connection through unexpected snippets into a strangers life.
All the Audacity Personal Portraits
This portrait series - of women for themselves - is an intentional project aimed at rewriting the internal codes that the patriarchy has instilled. By hanging a beautiful portrait of yourself somewhere in your home it will serve as a regular reminder of your inherent value.
How does it work? I paint a custom portrait of you and then you hang it somewhere you can see it. It will be beautiful, for sure - but also : let it represent the best verison of you : authentic and alive, and void of toxic societal expectations.
You are, of course, able to hang your portrait anywhere you see fit - but, keeping it somewhere unexpected is fun, too. So : tucked in the medicine cabinet, hidden on the back of your closet door, maybe down that one hallway you don't use everyday? The goal is to remind you of the very best version of you, in the quiet moments.
The hope is that this series might serve as a form of recalibration; so that women around the world can replace our knee-jerk self-doubt, our perpetual self-loathing, with what the consciousness of women actually understands: we are deeply deserving of all the beautiful things. And also, that we owe it to the women who came before us, to each other, and to ourselves, to live in that truth boldy.
Let it serve as a reminder:
: you are resoundingly beautiful
: the strength we have needed to endure the patriarchy is, at times, impossible to articulate; but universal in its violence
: we are all rooted deeply in a profound and powerful connection
: and, most importantly:
JOY IS YOUR BIRTHRIGHT
Let it fill you with all things feminine:
rage.
beauty.
power.
curiosity.
joy.
love.
intuition.
play.
Strange Girls Print & Pen Club
This monthly print club is a little different than the others...
Yes, you get an authentic piece of art from me, but you also get a bunch of anonymous anti-patriarchy penpals, too...
Its a monthly print club that brings a limited-edition signed print of one of my original works to your doorstep.
Each 5 x 7 print comes pre-labeled with another members address (paid postage included) and a space on the back for you to fill in, with whatever cute little musings that come to mind.
Add a little anonymous note, reveal a deep secret, rage about something awful, or write nothing at all too, if you aint got the time. Just make sure to drop it in the mail at some point - so that it ends up in the mailbox of the woman waiting for it. (You can then also expect to receive a cute anonymous little note on the same limited edition print, too. Send a little message, receive a little message.) *
Every month : a beautiful piece of art accompanied by a small connection to a stranger in the wild.
